The joint exhibition of IntAkt – Internationale Aktionsgemeinschaft bildender Künstlerinnen focuses on the connecting. Allying with other women, strengthening each other, helping and learning from each other – all this is what the title Sisterhood means, a term, which has been in use with a feminist implication since the 1970s. From medieval women’s circles to salons in the 17th and 18th centuries to the #WomensStrike movement and networks like IntAkt – they can all be understood as sisterhood communities.
The group exhibition brings images about women by women into focus. On show are selected, new works by IntAkt artists of different generations that deal with inspiring women or women’s collectives: From daughters and mothers, to colleagues and artists, to feminist pioneers and historical role models. The art works tell of women who make a difference from small to large scale, of individual personalities or communities. It is about friendships, role models, empowerment, solidarity and the power of collectives. Because feminism needs sisterhood. And the time for women is now.
